Create the winning design and see your App go live — worth up to £50,000!

O2 invites you to take part in an exciting new competition starting in November!

Appskool is an exciting new competition on O2 Learn for schools and students to design a mobile "app" with an educational or learning theme.

We want to use our expertise to provide a learning experience that is fun and provides a real life example of modern business and how skills can be used in the modern economy.

The competition has been designed in partnership with a leading application design agency and the winning school will be able to see their app being made and launched live on a mobile platform!

The competition is aimed at 13-18 year olds and you will need to send through your application to enter by Tuesday 31st January.

The competition entries will be submitted by March 30th and the finalists will be announced in April.

The Prize:

  • The winning team will have their app developed into a fully live version for public download. This can cost as much as £50,000 so it is a truly incredible prize!
  • The winning team will have the opportunity to visit our offices and see the app being created and launched.
  • If the app is chargeable or generates any revenue, 50% of the profit will go to the winning school and the rest will be reinvested into O2 Learn so that we can maintain our engagement with schools.

The Process:

  • There will be three modules to complete between November 2011 and March 2012.
  • The three modules are: Concept Development, Commercials and Design.
  • There will be a simple guide for each module so you know what to do.
  • When you have completed all 3 modules, email a short video presenting your design by March 30th.
  • We will review all submissions, provide feedback and choose 5 finalists.
  • The finalists will be invited to take part in the final module and present their idea in person to a panel of judges consisting of senior executives from O2 and a leading application developer.

The competition is the idea of Team Endeavour, a group of three O2 employees who wanted to put the resources and expertise within Telefonica and O2 to good use by running an education initiative.

We hope to stimulate creativity & give young people exposure to a real business experience and within that context, inspire career planning and motivate them to succeed.

We hope your school will take part in this exciting competition and learning experience.

Kind regards - Team Endeavour.

The competition is a lesson plan broken down into 3 modules that provide both theoretical and practical information about the app building process.

Each module will contain an easy to follow presentation guideproviding your students with practical information about the mobile industry, examples of successful cases and failures.

The guides are in pdf format and are available as a download from this site from 21st November.

Each module will test critical thinking skills by prompting students to answer a series of questions about their app idea.

Module 1 - 'Creating a great app concept'

We take students from brainstorming an idea to promotion by asking them the following practical questions:

  • What problems do you, your family or your friends face every day that could be solved by an app?
  • Is your idea really new?
  • Who is your app for?
  • What can you do to make sure your app remains popular?

Module 2 - 'Creating a commercial strategy'

We will encourage students to think about the costs and pricing behind app development by defining:

  • How much will it cost to build my app?
  • Should my app be free or paid?
  • How will I make money with my app?

Module 3 - 'Designing a mobile app'

Students will learn the unique art of balancing creativity and simplicity by creating:

  • Outline of their app
  • Skeleton of the different pages of their app
  • Mood board with colors and graphics that represent their app

The 5 finalists will complete the final module

Module 4 - 'Pitching your app'

We encourage students to practice one of the single most important skills in the professional world by asking them to define:

  • How will I make the judges remember my app?
  • What are the 5 most important things about my app?
  • How can I use research to prove my app will be a success?

In addition to the module guides we will provide additional hints & tips along the way such as:

  • 'Cheat sheets' highlighting the most important learning's for each module
  • List of common questions related to app development
  • Web sources for further research
